The combination of sun and laser hair removal is the topic that generates the most questions before summer. Can I have laser if I've been tanning? Can I go to the beach after a session? Do I have to wait for autumn to start? Let's clear it all up in one go — from our salon 25 min from central Madrid.

Why sun is the main contraindication

Laser acts on the melanin in the hair follicle. The problem is that tanned skin also has more surface melanin, which can make the laser "confuse" the skin with the hair and cause burns or dark spots. The more tanned the skin, the higher the risk.

That doesn't mean laser can't be done in summer. It means precautions have to be taken, and on actively tanned skin we adjust the parameters or postpone the session until the tan has faded.

The basic rule: no laser on tanned skin. That includes natural sun tanning, UVA sunbeds and self-tanners. Before each session we assess your skin and decide if it's the right time.

What to do before each session

What to do after each session

During the 48–72 hours after laser, the skin in the treated area is especially sensitised. It's very important to:

Can laser be done in summer? Yes, if you manage your sun exposure well. Many of our clients complete treatment in summer with no problem: they protect themselves properly, avoid direct sun on treated areas and respect the aftercare. What you can't do is spend the day at the beach and come in for laser the next day.

The ideal time is still autumn-winter: less sun, paler skin, better response to the treatment and easier recovery. If you can choose, start in September–October and arrive at the following summer with the treatment nearly complete.

The sun isn't the laser's enemy, but it does demand respect. With the right precautions, you can do the treatment almost any time of year.
