Summer has an effect on the skin that many people don't see until September: dark spots that weren't there before, more dilated pores, duller skin, deeper expression lines. And the worst part is that the damage happens silently, building up over weeks while you enjoy the sun. Here's what actually goes on and what you can do to minimise it, from our salon in Campo Real, 25 minutes from central Madrid.

What the sun does to your skin (even if you don't notice)

UV radiation affects the skin on several levels. UVB rays are responsible for visible burns. But UVA penetrates deeper, reaches the dermis and causes damage you don't see straight away:

The most common mistake: thinking that a tan protects the skin. A tan is actually the sign that the skin has been damaged and is producing melanin as a defensive response. It's not a sign of health — it's a defence mechanism.

The two-phase protocol I recommend

Phase 1: Before summer (now)

The goal is to strengthen the skin barrier and load the skin with antioxidants before sun exposure. A deep vitamin C facial (galvanic or mesotherapy) prepares the skin to neutralise free radicals better. It's also a good time for a deep-cleansing facial that leaves pores ready to face the heat and sweat.

Phase 2: After summer (September–October)

This is the repair phase: a gentle peel to renew the damaged stratum corneum, depigmenting mesotherapy if dark spots have appeared, and cellular regeneration treatments. Autumn is the best time for Dermapen, HIFU or any deeper treatment because the skin is receptive and the sun no longer interferes.

The most important thing you can do this summer: SPF 50 sun protection every day, no exceptions. Sunscreens have seen demand multiply because more and more people understand that protecting is easier than repairing. And they're right.

Sun damage isn't visible in July. It's visible in September. By then it's already too late to prevent it. Protecting is always easier than repairing.
