Not all dark spots are the same

Before starting any treatment, we identify what type of spot you have. The protocol changes considerably depending on the origin and the depth of the pigmentation. A hormonal spot and a sun spot are not treated the same way:

Type 01

Solar lentigines (sun spots)

The classic "age spots". Small, brown, with well-defined edges. They appear in chronically exposed areas: cheekbones, décolletage, back of hands, forearms. Cause: cumulative sun exposure.

Response to treatment: very good (60–80% reduction)

Type 02

Melasma

Large, symmetrical patches with diffuse edges. On the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and chin. Hormonal component: pregnancy, oral contraceptives, thyroid. The most resistant kind.

Response: requires lifelong maintenance

Type 03

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Dark marks left after acne, a wound, a burn or a badly performed treatment. It is the imprint left by inflammation.

Response: good with time (3–6 months)

Type 04

Freckles (ephelides)

Genetic, they intensify with sun exposure. For many people, they are part of their identity. They do respond to depigmenting products if you want to soften them, but they return with the sun.

Response: improvable but not removable

Timing matters

Why we treat dark spots from September to February

It is the safe window. Three reasons that make it worth waiting for autumn:

01
UV radiation has dropped

Depigmenting treatments and peels make the skin more sensitive to light. In summer there is a high risk of "pigmentary rebound": the spot returns darker. In autumn the skin heals without risk.

02
Melanocytes calm down

After months of exposure they are hyperactive. Any stimulus in summer triggers more pigment. After a few weeks without intense sun, melanocytes settle down and treatments perform better.

03
Time to complete a full protocol before the next season

If you start in September, you finish in January–February. You have the whole winter to consolidate results without any strong sun, and you arrive at the following spring with your skin at its best.

Realistic calendar

The plan, month by month, from September to February

This is what we usually do with clients following the full protocol. Your exact calendar is adjusted after your consultation:

September

Diagnosis + kick-off

Assessment of the type of spot. Start of the active at-home routine (niacinamide, vitamin C). First gentle peel session.

October – November

Intensive sessions

Chemical peel every 3–4 weeks + LED photoluminic therapy + depigmenting mesotherapy if suitable. This is where the biggest improvement happens.

December – February

Maintenance

One monthly session + active at-home routine. Consolidated results and skin ready for the next season.

At-home skincare

The 6 actives you need at home

Salon sessions deliver only half their potential without an active routine at home. These are the key actives we recommend based on your skin and your spot type:

Niacinamide 5–10%
Reduces melanin transfer and evens out skin tone. Well tolerated.
Tranexamic acid
Particularly useful in melasma. Reduces melanocyte activation.
Stabilised vitamin C
Antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitor. Improves luminosity and softens pigmentation.
Azelaic acid 10–15%
Dual function: treats the inflammatory component and progressively lightens.
Scheduled retinol
Renews the skin and helps remove pigment. Autumn and winter only.
Daily SPF 50 mineral
The single most important factor. Without daily SPF, treatments are a waste of money.

"Treating dark spots is not about erasing pigment overnight: it is about teaching the skin to produce less and helping it clear away what is already there."

Frequently asked questions about dark spots

When is the best time to treat dark spots? +

September to February. That is the window when UV radiation drops and depigmenting treatments are safe (in summer there is a high risk of pigmentary rebound).

How many sessions do I need? +

Typically 4 to 6 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart, plus monthly maintenance afterwards. The exact plan depends on the type of spot and how your skin responds.

Do dark spots disappear completely? +

Solar lentigines respond very well and are reduced by 60–80% with a full plan. Melasma is more resistant and requires lifelong maintenance because it has a hormonal component. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation improves well with time.

Why can't dark spots be treated in summer? +

Depigmenting treatments make the skin more sensitive to light. If applied under strong sun, the risk of pigmentary rebound (the spot returning darker) is high. That is why we wait until UV radiation drops.

Is daily SPF really essential? +

Yes, without exception. The single factor that most influences your result is not the treatment you choose but the SPF you use every day, all year round. Without daily sun protection, depigmenting treatments are a waste of money.

Can I combine at-home treatments with the ones in the salon? +

Yes, it is recommended. The key at-home actives are: niacinamide, tranexamic acid, stabilised vitamin C, azelaic acid and scheduled retinol. We tell you which ones to use for your skin and space them out around the salon sessions to avoid overloading.

How much does a full dark-spot protocol cost? +

A closed price for the full plan (more affordable than individual sessions). We give you the figure during your consultation, together with the personalised plan and the at-home products we recommend. Ask us on WhatsApp with no obligation.
