The heat arrives and with it the first pool evenings and beach weekends. The skin welcomes it — at first. After a few days, what looked like the perfect summer starts to show: tightness, flaking, tiny new spots appearing, a rough texture that wasn't there in May. It's not just the sun's fault: it's the combination of chlorine, salt and UV radiation acting together. The good news is you can prevent and rescue it. Just 25 min from central Madrid, in Campo Real.
What's really happening to your skin
Your skin has a barrier (the hydrolipidic mantle) that protects it from dehydration, bacteria and irritants. When that barrier is healthy, it retains water and keeps the balance. Summer attacks it on three fronts:
- Pool chlorine: it's an oxidiser. It thins protective lipids, alters the pH, dries the skin out and, in sensitive skin, causes itching, redness and flaking.
- Sea salt: it's osmotically "thirsty" — it pulls water outward. If dry salt stays on you for hours, the skin loses hydration and the barrier weakens.
- Sun and heat: accelerate insensible water loss, generate free radicals and trigger melanogenesis (dark spots).
If on top of that you towel-dry by rubbing, add a poolside drink and get too little sleep, the skin barrier ends the week exhausted.
The most common mistake: thinking the skin "gets used to it". It doesn't get used to it: it slowly deteriorates and the damage adds up. September is when the dark spots, rough texture and dehydration-linked laxity show.
The 4 typical mistakes from May to September
I see these four almost daily in the treatment room:
- Reapplying sunscreen only on the face and forgetting the body. The décolletage, shoulders, upper back and hands are the areas that accumulate the most spots over the years.
- Not rinsing off when you leave the water. Five minutes with chlorine or salt still on your skin is five extra minutes of aggression after the swim is done.
- Exfoliating with strong products in peak season. Glycolic, salicylic or retinol under strong sun = high risk of post-inflammatory dark spots.
- Moisturising only at night. In summer the skin loses water all day long. Hydration has to be morning and night, and ideally after each swim.
Pre- and post-swim routine that actually works
In-salon treatments that rescue the skin
When the at-home routine isn't enough or you're coming off a few intense beach days, in-salon treatments can restore the skin fast. The ones that work best in peak season are those that don't stress the skin and provide hydration, calm or gentle renewal:
Himalayan salt body scrub
A gentle mineral exfoliation that removes the dead cells left behind by chlorine and salt, without chemical aggression. The skin ends up visibly more even, more hydrated and absorbs your at-home body cream far better. The perfect "reset" at the end of a beach weekend.
Light therapy (LED)
LED light at different wavelengths. Red light regenerates and firms; blue light calms and reduces inflammation. It's ideal for reactive skin after the sun because it works without heat and without products. A 20-minute session visibly brings redness down.
Lymphatic drainage and pressotherapy
Heat and salt cause fluid retention. Drainage and pressotherapy activate circulation, remove fluid and decongest legs, ankles and abdomen. It shows from the first session and builds well over several in a row.
Deep-cleansing facial + soothing mask
A full cleanse removes sunscreen residue, chlorine leftovers and accumulated grime — which is the main cause of the breakouts that appear "out of nowhere" in August. Combined with a hydrating mask and/or LED therapy, it leaves skin rested and luminous.
When's the best time: at the end of every intense beach or pool week. Don't wait until September. One session every 10–14 days in July and August stops damage from accumulating and keeps the skin in good shape all summer.
The areas that always get overlooked
When to book an appointment (and when not to)
Not everything needs a treatment room. If your skin is just a bit dry at the end of the week, good at-home hydration is enough. Book if you notice any of these signs:
- Flaking that doesn't clear with moisturiser in 3–4 days.
- New tiny spots after an intense week.
- Breakouts or folliculitis (little red bumps in swimsuit friction areas).
- Swollen or heavy legs at the end of the day.
- Rough body texture, especially on arms and thighs.
- Tightness or burning on the face that lasts more than 48h.
and your skin's showing it?
At Esencia Estética we've built a post-beach rescue protocol with Himalayan salt scrub, LED therapy and drainage. One session is enough to reset; kept up every 10–14 days, it takes you through summer with no accumulated damage.
